Some brands are built on trends. Thirteen Degrees South was built on something older—the intelligence of a landscape that has been perfecting its chemistry for millennia.
The story of our inaugural Cellular Serum doesn’t begin in a corporate boardroom or a modern cosmetics lab. It begins twenty-two years ago, emerging from the red dust of a life-changing exploration trip to Arnhem Land.
It was there that our Founder and Managing Director, Mark Provost, first learned of the Kakadu Plum (Terminalia ferdinandiana).
Long before it became a buzzy marketing word on global beauty shelves, Mark recognised the profound potency of this fruit. He wanted to build the first skincare brand in the world to harness it. But twenty-two years ago, the modern wellness industry wasn't ready. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) had yet to formally recognise it.
Driven by a conviction that wouldn't let him go, Mark began writing to the TGA. He pushed for answers, demanding they recognise what First Nations Australians had known for millennia: that the chemical profile and extensive history of traditional use proved this plant was extraordinary.
Eventually, the regulatory landscape caught up to the wisdom of the land. The TGA issued Recommendation 42.2, officially concluding that Kakadu plum fruit flesh and its water-based extracts were safe, stable, and suitable for use as active ingredients.
It took over two decades, but today, that very same Kakadu Plum is the hero ingredient of Thirteen Degrees South.
A Friendship Forged in the Sand: The Legacy of Gunya Titjikala
But a hero ingredient requires a philosophy to guide it. The soul behind Thirteen Degrees South was shaped by a rare, foundational relationship born out of a historic venture.
In the early 2000s, Mark founded Gunya Titjikala—hailed by Time Magazine, The New York Times, and the Financial Times as Australia’s very first Aboriginal Resort. It was a groundbreaking luxury social tourism project built on deep cultural immersion and profound respect for the land.
It was here, working side-by-side, that Mark formed a rare and enduring friendship with the resort's head guide: the last known medicine man of the Simpson Desert.
Together, they went on expeditions through some of the most remote, unforgiving country in Australia. This extraordinary mentor revealed plants of immense resilience and medicinal depth, sharing sacred botanical knowledge held by his people for generations.
Though Gunya Titjikala was cut short, the profound lessons learned out in the dunes remained. That experience was formative. It made it undeniable that the intelligence of this land was something the world deserved access to—and that bringing it forward demanded an uncompromising integrity.
“The intelligence held by this land is something the world needs access to — and it deserves to be brought forward with integrity.” — Mark Provost, Founder
From the Tanami Desert to the Lab
Mark continues that vital work today. Based out of the remote Tanami Desert in the Northern Territory, he develops formulas and sources ingredients in direct, raw proximity to the very landscape that inspires them.
Thirteen Degrees South was founded on three non-negotiable principles: honest ingredients, rigorous science, and total transparency. We do not mass-produce, nor do we cut corners. Every single formulation is developed under strict laboratory conditions and produced in hyper-small, quality-verified batches—with exacting scientific oversight at every single stage. Every ingredient is completely traceable. Every clinical claim is substantiated.
“We are not following the industry’s lead. We are building something where the integrity of the ingredient is non-negotiable, and the results speak without embellishment.” — Mark Provost, Founder
Twenty-two years in the making. Welcome to Thirteen Degrees South.
